Would You Privatize Defense?

Timothy Noah of Slate wrote this article yesterday about the case for socialized healthcare. It’s an allegorical tale of an America with privatized national defense. People who place a high value on defense (and have the money for higher premiums) would be able to afford the best defense plans, and the people with little money or inclination to put toward defense would have less expensive premiums, but higher out-of-pocket costs for paying the militia to defend them against attack. Those people living in cities that have already been attacked (Baltimore, Honolulu, Washington DC and New York) would basically be uninsurable, because the defense insurance companies would place them in a very high risk category.

Sound familiar?

This is the way the political left needs to start framing these discussions if they’re going to make people understand that healthcare, like national defense, isn’t a privilege. It’s a right. It’s a moral responsibility of the government to care for its people. Everyone, regardless of income, deserves the same access to heathcare.

In our current system, costs are skyrocketing. The system is broken, and needs to be fixed. We’re the wealthiest nation on earth, yet the only nation of its kind with this kind of healthcare system. What’s wrong with us?

    Brian, your use of “general welfare” is more in line with the views of current progressives rather than that of the Constitutional framers. They did not intend that Congress should spend money to meet all the needs (rights?) of the people but only to execute the duties given to the Federal government by the Constitution and secure the general welfare through these granted duties. In particular see Article I, Section 8.

    Nowhere did the framers give Congress the power enact legislation for the general welfare beyond their powers, this is specifically reserved to the states in the 10th Amendment.

    Maybe the Federal government has the right to spend money for the general welfare but they do not have the right to legislate it as they are trying to do through enactment of the healthcare bill. If anything, the Federal government should merely supply funds to the States and allow them to enact healthcare as they see fit for their citizens.

    Lastly, do you know of anyone that would be refused treatment if they showed up at an emergency room or state/local public clinic? Healthcare is not being denied. It may not be the level of that given to our Congress and President but it is there and available.

    The purpose of the current legislation is not to ensure healthcare for all but to take over and exact Federal control over the healthcare industry. Your original post advocated rights of the people, the healthcare plan will only further limit their choices and freedoms to choose their own destinies by an ever increasingly large “Government”.

    I say: Notice the word “promote” Not run or own…In the Bill before the house now as we speak are several devastating policies or agendas…One is that for the elderly choice of life may not be their choice anymore…just as replaced joints such as hips etc…It will be “take pain killers and move on”…

    We do in fact have a great health care system. Is it the best – no idea because you have to have a fair and universal rating system. Lets take the study health care reform advocates cite as proof the U.S. system is broken—The World Health Organization’s 2000 study which rated the U.S. as 37th in health care. Sounds pretty grim until you look at the list and see who is better than we are. Countries like Columbia, Morocco, Canada, France, Great Britain and Costa Rica to name a few. You have to be kidding if you want to use this study as proof we have a broken Health Care system! Look at the thousands coming here each month from every one of the countries listed as better the U.S. If we are so low in the ranking how come they don’t stay home? The answer is obvious- we have a superb medical system that they don’t have in their own countries. That’s the study that counts—patients vote with their feet.

    Finally, a personal story that is happening now. A restaurant worker with no insurance recently developed a kidney stone. He went to the emergency room where he was initially diagnosed and was told to go home and wait for it to pass. After a week it still had not passed and they decided to implant a stint to help pass the stone and admitted him to the hospital. As he had no insurance and a minimum wage job I was curious as to how it was going to be paid. Turns out he signed a loan agreement with payments based on his income and is being treated. I am confused by what I am being told is a crappy health care system- Here he was treated immediately and admitted to the hospital. Had he been in Canada or England under their health care system, it could have taken as long as 6 months to even be seen by a urologist. So where our system is broke and who is perpetuating the myths that it is broke?”

    Lastly this ~jude counters…If this Healthcare is so great then why is the President and ALL of congress excused from it…
    When the breakdown to actually numbers comes in it was found that within the uninsured, where
    1. People who don’t think they need to be insured…mostly young..
    2.People who are covered under their employers but have decided not to participate…
    3. People in between jobs who elected to not seek out Cobra…. there are more but will use later

    Some people think that insurance is a way of saving money. It’s not. The concept behind insurance is to cover you for unexpected large costs that might otherwise cause financial difficulty. For this, you pay a price. Health funds by and large, like any business, need to make a surplus to cover future expenses and investment. They generate more in premiums than they pay in claims – if they didn’t, they’d soon go out of business.

    Even non-profit funds generally pay only 85 to 90 per cent of premiums back to policy holders; the other 10 to 15 per cent covers administration and costs. In other words, for every hospital bill your fund covers, you are paying an additional 10 to 15 per cent in premiums. In the case of some funds it could be more.

    What if, instead of paying these premiums to the health fund, you saved them and paid the costs of any hospital and medical treatment from these accumulated savings? This is the concept of self insurance – regularly putting aside an amount towards your own ‘fund’ to cover that unexpectedly large bill. Most people would be financially better off doing this, because not only would they be keeping the additional 15 per cent , they’d also be earning interest – of say, five or six per cent – on the balance of their account.

    This would be an effective 20 per cent return on the amount that otherwise would have gone to a health fund. Another incentive for self-insuring is that you can claim a 20 per cent tax rebate on medical costs above $1500 in any financial year.

    There is a risk that you might incur a large bill in the early years of self insurance when you won’t have accumulated enough to cover the bill. And some people are just not good at saving. You would need to be prepared to use the public hospital system for emergency treatment, and even for major elective treatment (with a longer wait). But if you are disciplined about it, self insurance might make more sense for you.

    First of all, what our ancestors did is of little importance. We live in a different world, with different problems. The health of a population depends on many factors, one of which is access to affordable health care. Many people in this country have little or no access to health care because they simply cannot afford insurance, or their employer does not offer it.

    This is simply incorrect. Read the preamble to the US Constitution, which outlines the purpose of the document underlying our government:

    “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

    Some pretty straightforward issues there:

    1. We the people: this equals democracy, government of, by and for the people.

    2. “Establish Justice” – Justice and fairness go hand in hand with equality.

    3. Common defense: you touched on that, correctly.

    4. Promote the general welfare – This is where I believe principle underlying equal access to health care exists. The framers understood that a country’s success was directly linked to its peoples’ general welfare, and that the government should promote that. Just as the government needed to protect its people through common defense, it needed to protect its peoples’ general welfare.

    5. To Secure the Blessings of Liberty: This is the freedom part. How can anyone in this country be free when so many are oppressed by a system that does not provide for their general welfare? The country stands a better chance of collapsing if we neglect to provide for the peoples’ general welfare!

    This isn’t about government controlling people’s lives, it’s about providing for the people’s general welfare so that they may be free to pursue happiness with life and liberty!

    The more government comes in and controls our lives the more freedoms we lose. History ALWAYS repeats itself and so we are seeing the decline of an empire…One unable to sustain to maintain it’s population base or it’s culture.

    Defense….that was one of the government’s duties through it’s people…this is a tough one..think of Blackwater…Control of any identity at this point in time leaves that control in the hands of those who have the money and power, just as they control the government..

    Which is why it is so important to not go with the NWO and put control into even a fewer amount of people.
    I know this doesn’t directly answer your question but at this point unless there is a revolution whether spiritual/physical I feel that it[the question] as many other questions are redundant…
